The last time I made an .htaccess file every time I uploaded it I got an internal error once the site was loaded.

So I sent the file over to my tech. He uploaded it and all was well. He had no idea why there was a problem since he didn't make any changes to my file.

I'm having the same problem again. I use WS-FTP, and have a choice between ASCII mode and Binary mode. I normally use Binary, but tried ascii too and had the same problem.

I know there are some VERY knowledgable people here and was hoping for some additional information.

Thanks.

Try this:

Upload the file as a basic text document.

So, on your PC, save the file as htaccess.txt - then upload that file to the server.

Now, scoot onto the server and rename that puppy to .htaccess

Works for me every time and I use Windows to FTP the files back and forth.

Good idead but it didn't work. Same problem. It has to be something happening in the upload?

I've only rarely had to do that for specific items, and never to get an htaccess working unless something needed to modify the doc at some point (like a Wordpress install for example - I mod mine manually, though.).

I emailed it to my tech.

He copied it into notepad for Linux and FTP'd it. He specified that he used ASCII mode when he FTP'd it and that Binary wouldn't work.

He also said to do what you said about uploading it and renaming it.

When he did all this, the file worked fine. So there's definately no error in the syntax.

So I tried again following these details and continued to have the same problem.

I checked the file permissions and they are exactly the same as the .htaccess I have on other sites. So it's not that.

It's either in the file being saved, or the file being FTP'd.

I'm using Windows version of notepad. I have it as a txt file, and I have tried ANSI (default), UNICODE, UNICODE BIG ENDIAN and UTF-8.

If the problem is in the FTP-ing I don't think there are any other configuration changes I can make.

BTW, I have no problem with an .htaccess document that protects a directory.

Bingo

I'm using Windows version of notepad.

...ah, how can I put this gently?

Don't use Notepad for this work - it has a habit of messing things up - thank you Microsoft!

use a stand alone text editing program. I use a program called UltraEdit, though I'm sure others can offer other suggestions.

Regardless, Notepad is out for future work on htaccess file, 'k?

Now, repeat after me, five times:

"Notepad is evil."
"Notepad is evil."
"Notepad is evil."

"Notepad is evil."

I have Zend Studio which I use for PHP, and ACE HTML which is a true HTML editor.

Do you think either of those would work?

I have, once, used Dreamweaver to edit an htaccess doc - saved it as a text doc, did the transfer and rename thingie. Worked fine.

I suspect the html editor might do it, so long as you can edit code and save as a .txt file - but I've never tried on that app before, so your results may vary... sad

It is something all Perl programmers are familiar with when they work in windows machines. You need to set the file format (CR/LF) to Unix instead of PC. Use Editplus instead of a notepad.
