Two thirds of Internet searchers use direct navigation

what do your think, this proves that SEO is only a part of the marketing strategy. Interesting stats

New York—Direct navigation—typing a generic category plus “.com” directly into a Web browser—is growing, according to an Opinion Research Corp. survey for LeaseThis.com, a company that leases domain names at a flat rate.

Sixty-four percent of Web surfers surveyed bypass search engines and type keywords into their browsers. One fourth (26%) said they bypass search engines at least once a day while surfing, and 38% said they bypass search engines weekly or monthly.

More than half (53%) of those surveyed said they would always or sometimes bypass search engines if they could access what they are looking for on the Internet by typing the category name into their browser.

...only that this might be useful for those domains that are using the right keywords in their domain...

My personal traffic stats paint an entirely different picture, though this info does explain one small item.

Typically my traffic comes mostly (77%) from the engines...though I do notice that "online marketing" and "online marketing help" seem to be the two biggest providers of inbound search traffic.

So, on that point, I suppose you could say it does back up the article. I have "online marketing" in the domain name, and if the trend is truly moving in the category+.com direction, then I say WOOHOO!

Maybe we're seeing even search engine users trend in this direction?

didn't IE incorporate MSN into the browser address bar to catch the URLS that were wrong and turn them into search queries.

so in the end would these have been added to the MSN search stats, thus skewing the results as the searchers never acually went to MSN

If any of the stats cranked out by Opinion Research Corp. had a grain of validity, MSN would have surpassed Google several months ago as the default, King-Hell engine on the planet.

The surfers aren't "bypassing" anything. Where do they think the results are coming from, their browser? The difference between typing some keywords into the address box vs the query box is a study that proves... mostly nothing except for that it produces another raft of illegitimate statistics for propeller-heads to scratch over, IMHO.

That is called searcher behaviour. You actually can not guide the visitor nor you can be sure of any particular trend. Its all very subjective and differs from user to user.
