...and this form of linking should be avoided, too - the engines see if for what it is, and don't like it.

People moved to 3-way linking when Google began penalising sites using reciprocal (two-way) linking.
Google has a very large database, and for every site in their database, they know for every site what they all link to and from.
Unusual linking patterns must be fairly obvious to them. So, don't try 4-way or 5-way linking as they are probably already on to that too....

3-way link is a method where 3 sites are involved, for example, a webmaster who requested a link exchange has 2 sites. He wants to put a link to a site, but in exchange the site where the link to a new site is placed on the other site which is old and rich with traffic/backlinks.
