Looking for any advice or suggestions to have a .com URL show up on Google.co.uk and other international search engines. Is this even possible?
Would we want to purchase a .uk domain? Also, does the country it's being hosted in affect rankings? For example, if I own a .UK domain, but it's hosted in the US, would it show up in UK SE's? Has anyone had any luck?

Depends whether you want JUST uk, or the world plus MORE UK.
To get the best of the UK, you need EITHER .co.uk OR UK hosting. You don't need both.
But if you want the world, stick with the .com, and host wherever you get the best value (ie not the UK!!!).
All my sites are hosted in the US, and my .co.uk's do just fine; and .coms do ok too - but there's more competition, so you have to keep at it.

Thanks for the info. Do you have your .co.uk domains re-direct to .coms or do you have separate sites. To clarify, we have a .com that is hosted in the US and we want to reach customers overseas (mainly the UK, but also other European countries). Does it make sense to maintain a single .com site and have the .co.uk address re-direct to it, or have a separate site running for each domain.

If your site is a .com how do SEs even know the difference between a site that is relevant to people in the UK and one that is not?

Getting a listing from DMOZ in a UK category should help but is not always possible - it depends on your business model and where you are based.
Having a UK subdomain could help to get round this. If you let your visitors choose their nationality and take them to uk.yourdomain.com - you can then submit that URL to Dmoz and UK Directories. This information may not be relevant to you but I hope it helps.

Also remember that SEs such as Google UK still search the entire web but give preference to UK results (unless the user has opted for UK only results). Getting a few links from UK websites to your own should show google that your site is relevant to its UK searchers.

If you NEED a separate UK site - eg for taking UK currency, then you could make a case to do that.
But dividing your site among different domains rarely helps; it divides your incoming links among several sites, it doubles your marketing effort, it potentially confuses visitors, and it potentially brings duplicate content problems.
The .com can work for a multinational audience, but is less likely to if it is undermined by sibling sites!
One way around it is for a 'local section' with a distinctive local content.
All this, of course, depends on the specifics of your problem, and you'll need to make a 'best guess' about what will work for you.
I often own both the com and co.uk domains, but I only use one (usually), and use a 301 redirect in most cases. This isn't for seo purposes, but to protect my 'brand', and to catch the occasional type-in error.
