I have a very well established domain name. Due to reasons I HAVE to start using another domain name. I heard there is some sort of redirect I can use. Would the new site will then INHERIT all the strength, ranking and same popularity as the old domain if Ido a redirect ? What do I stand to lose if I do that ? Thanks

You need a 301 permanent redirect from the old domain to the new will minimise problems.

But here will be damage. If the move is not made correctly, there will be disruption over perhaps days.

Even if the move is made perfectly, you cannot expect to get 100% of the benfits the old site had, and you'll need to work hard to build up the new site.

    Remember: Cool URIs don't change

Use a 301 redirect. Make sure that the new site has the same folder and filenames as the old site. Make sure that the redirect is one-to-one, that for each old page that it redirects to the same page on the new site. Cater for both www and non-www within the same redirect rule.
