I just want a basic site with say 3-4 pages. The pages would be a 1)homepage with flash and some attractive bordering, 2)photo gallery, 3) contact us pg. I would write all the content. How much should that cost to have someone make.

You might want to review some of those requirements. smile

Investigate what problems Flash will cause for search engines, especially when placed on your home page.

Be aware that search engines follow links and index text, so your images will be of no interest to them.

Are you sure you only have 3 or 4 pages of content? Even the smallest one-man business can easily squeeze out 20 pages of content about what they do, where they do it, what they have done, how they do it, and what they can do for you, how much it costs, and how to contact them if you want some...

I am in the construction business and I have optimized similar sites with only 3 pages total content, and they are doing really well. Most of the construction industry tends to be a little behind when it comes to anything computer. So hopefully my new site will be alright with a similar set up. But if you or anyone else could help me with estimating how much it should cost me to build my new site.

    yes to the pic question.

The glint and glamor you see on sites are not SE friendly.

As for cost - it really varies widely. Sometimes demographics of location are what sets the prices.

Example: I am in Pa and around here this type of site would cost you about 500 - 700.00
But my sister who lives in LA says out there this same site would not be touched for under 1,000 - 1,200...

So I am really not sure if you can get a "pat" answer without first interviewing a few people and see what the going rate is.

A designer can tell you how much he will charge. Try posting your requirements on sites like getafreelancer.com

So why not get ahead of them all and build a truly great site/resource? It will be worth it in the long run smile

Ok. Let us see if we can get this thing a little murkier ...

beth has mentioned that it depends on the region. There are one-man companies located in some countries who could probably dish up a site for less than a 100 $. Generally speaking you pay what you get. Be wary of the props/models used in the images/flash files.

Any images used in the website need to be purchased. Some designers/developers might circumvent this process and finally you may have to pay a steep price when a copyrighted image is used in your site.

Why settle for mediocre when a rich-content site, with top-line SEO would blow the cometition out of the water?

This site is for a temporary business just to keep me busy during the housing market mess, so im not worried about creating a great site at a high cost. Thanks for the input and the ball park pricing, i am near DC and am looking to pay around $1,500.

There are website generators and programs that build simple looking sites for next to nothing...

I'm a developer / designer in the UK and (on the side) would charge only about £150 for this, depending on exactly what was required.

My advice if you are looking for a web designer or company to build you a website is show around and check out examples of work... Get a time scale and also make sure you don't pay a penny until the site is complete and you're happy with it.

$1,500 should get exactly what the dude above you has said you should go for... If you pay $1,500 for a basic 3 page site you've been had...

Have you got all the images that need to go on the site pre-prepared, and it's just a coding job, or does a logo have to be designed too?

As for payments, many designers would ask for a percentage upfront, and the rest on or near completion.

its like asking whats the price of a meal at a restaurant, it all depends, and of the location too,you can get a local professional or at one of those freelance or overseas designers that are super cheap.

Have you got the domain name and hosting already sorted out?

Is it an Apache or an IIS webserver?

Apache and IIS are the webserver programs that deliver the website to your visitor. Apache is a lot easier to work with and has a lot of desireable features. IIS has some nasty flaws as far as SEO goes.

What sort of hosting have you got? Is it "proper" hosting, or just basic access to some storefront account? The word "Yahoo" scared the bejesus out of me, their hosting is very restrictive as to what you can do.

ok i took the advice from above and used getafreelancer.com, wow way to many emails in the last 17 hours. But i did talk to one lady from the US she works for GetLeadsFast.com, anybody know of them. They seem big and not very personal but their talking 400 dollars and i can host with them for 10 a month. If someone can check their site and tell me what they think that would be awesome. O yeah she said they use PHP and not HTML.
