So I have been going through all the various steps in order to make my website more search engine friendly, but I am having trouble with the sitemap. I ran the sitemap program from a link I found on these forums and everything came out right. However, I placed this HTML code onto my ftp server and in doing so I have gotten errors twice in a row stating...

"Unsupported file format
Your Sitemap does not appear to be in a supported format. Please ensure it meets our Sitemap guidelines and resubmit."

Does anyone know what I may be doing wrong, or where I should be putting the html code they are giving me?

Thanks for the help

SteeringMan

I'm guessing you are getting the error from Google Webmaster Central.

If so, the sitemap needs to be in XML not HTML.

Your site map should be in the format as outlined here: [link]

These sitemaps need to follow the protocol which is a dialect of XML for summarizing sitemap information, as outlined in Google's webmaster guideline pages.

It looks like this:

Code: [copy]

xml-sitemaps.com will produce one for you. Or, if you want to buy a sitemap generator, those lovely people at Coffee Cup Software have a good one.

Thanks for the responses...

I did run the sitemap program and get an output like you said. I saved the file in .xml format. But where exactly do I paste this information?

As of now I just have a sitemap.xml file in my main directory on the web server. Should the code actually be placed on one of my main pages like my homepage or is what I am doing correct?

Thanks

The site map needs to be in your web facing directory so that it may be found at domain.com/sitemap.xml.

If you still searching for a solution to your problem -

just copy and replace the below two lines of code with the top two lines of your sitemap.xml file.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
<urlset xmlns="http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap/0.84" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap/0.84 http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap/0.84/sitemap.xsd">

All the best.
