I have been using several SEO techniques I have acquired over the years to work on a website. In order to measure how the website works I have been using website grader to see how search engines see results. This website grader states that my web page has too many images. My website has 41 images, 38 I have added alt tags to. Does anyone have experience with a high amount of images hurting their SEO rankings?

Images neither help nor hinder; unless you are blaming them for squeezing text off the page.
What matters is the amount of text; SEs need that to match search terms to your page. Other than ALT text, pictures are simply ignored.

although alt text is not ignored, it does not carry very much weight in the ranking formula. I see many sites where they have locked their keywords up into images thinking that the alt text will do carry the same weight as text. It does not.
also, when using the alt tag, also use a title tag in the image for firefox browser, it does not use the alt tag.
