I know that there is probably no definitive answer, but
does it matter in search engine optimization whether you use PHP or ASP for your CMS.

Look forward to hearing your ideas.

it doesn't make a difference what language you write your websites or CMS' in (except Flash, but it's not really a language) as all of them produce HTML which is what the search engines really understand.

A look outside SEO, PHP is usually the better way to go as there is more help on the subject and is generally more popular but both could get the same job done.

I agree with dudibob, PHP is the way to go, unless you can write your own asp.

From my experience, asp is associated with microsoft, and this is associated with paying money.

PHP I associate with open source, much much less money to use and easier to write and customize,

I know, we all have our favorites.

Aside from all the above, PHP in a *nix environment also allows you to unleash the power of Apache server without paying a dime towards third party modules. Page redirection, retaining html extension for PHP and other techniques involving the use of Mod_rewrite require no additional investment in a Linux/Apache server unlike IIS.
