    Hello!

Today I searched for one of my top search phrases. The first result in the organic SERP was a page that was also included in the Yahoo directory.

I checked out the directory category that this site was listed in and noticed that you can sort your results by "popularity" in addition to alphabetically.

I was wondering if anyone knows what exactly "popularity" means in this context.

Yahoo has a short explanation on their site:

By default, Directory site listings are presented sorted by popularity and relevance. Sites that are most popular with users or the most relevant to the category appear at the top of the site listings. The order of web sites or web documents is based upon Yahoo! Search Technology. If the category is large, the listings will display over multiple pages with pagination displayed at bottom of the page.

But I'm not sure what this means to us... Are they tracking clickthroughs? (It looks like it.) Are they talking about inbound links? How do they determine relevance within a directory category? Does a "popular" site in the directory get priority in the organic SERPs?

Any insights would be very much appreciated.
