I would use Yahoo! to check backlinks.

    On Yahoo!, I use:
    linkdomain:domain.com -site:domain.com
    to check the backlinks.

There's no need to use Google; sometimes you can get an accurate count at MSN.

I always used to get results using the syntax in the thread title.

Incidentally, what is the -site part for?

To remove the same site links from the results right?

    Correct.

Also note changes over past month...
    link]

August 10, 2006 - A lot of webmasters use Yahoo! Search to get page and inlink data about their site, using 'site:', 'link:', 'linkdomain:' queries.

Starting last night, we are redirecting all queries of this nature to the Site Explorer results pages, so that you can benefit from this tool's additional features.

Thanks for that Logan, however, I'm not being redirected to the site explorer.

I am getting the results I expected though with the corrected syntax.

Curious why you don't get redirected to site explorer? Isn't everyone? i do

Good to hear you have it figured out.

my understanding of the different syntax has been -

    link:domain.com
Search all links to the home page of the domain specified

    linkdomain:domain.com
Search all links to any page of the domain specified

link:www.domain.com and link:domain.com return a "we did not find any results for blah blah"

I've just had a look at the site explorer.

    Very useful tool.

You can use link popularity checker to see who linking to the site of interest.
