Okay, I have a number of thoughts etc, but before I share my ideas, I am curious what other ideas the professionals in this forum have for the following situation. My hope is a few ideas will come out of the woodwork to help further.

---------------------

Client cares about a highly competitive, high searched, and generic (broad) term.

- Currently ranking #8 in Yahoo for this term
- Currently ranking #1 in Google (With Site Links) for this term

How can we get that Yahoo ranking UP without damaging that Google ranking.

---------------------

Any thoughts?

(I do have some thoughts on how to accomplish this, but am hoping to get some responses which are honest and do not simply feed off of my ideas.)

Work on building extra the content and making sure the site navigation is as good as it can be.Niether will hurt google rankings, and may improve your place in Yahoo!

Yep - don't sweat rankings - seriously.

Sweat conversions and inbound traffic numbers from the engines.

Rankings fluctuate often - sometimes daily - so this will be a never ending battle when the client sees themselves go up and down a bit.

On top of this, since each algo is a bit different, they may be "as good as they can get" with the current algo.

I'll add that anything you do to tweak their site should be generic, not focused on the "desires" of a particular engine. Since no one even knows the actual algo's outside the engines themselves, it's guesswork.

If the client were mine, I'd invest time in educating them on the value of real, trackable metrics, such as conversions, page views, visits, site engagement, time on site, etc. I refuse client requests that center on rankings as any kind of measurement.

freeflyer, that's not what he said.

.

Disagreement is fine; strong beliefs are fine.

Sniping really isn't called for. Please stop it.
