Sure, it will work -- because many people are idiots.
1. Can you delete specific email messages from Google's system?
2. Can you trust that it is really deleted if Google says it is deleted?
3. Would all this email be available to the government, or to private parties involved in legal discovery, if they have a subpoena?
4. If for some reason you need to cleanse something, and all you get are a bunch of AdWords ads from Gmail that refer you to criminal defense attorneys, along with a popup message that says, "Sorry, messages cannot be deleted," are you going to feel like an idiot?

Oh come on, it has to be a hoax. No way a real press release has statements like this in it...
"She kvetched about spending all her time filing messages or trying to find them"
"Millions of M&Ms later, Gmail was born."
"That's why Gmail comes with 1,000 megabytes (1 gigabyte) of free storage" - You're telling me that Google is giving out a Gig of storage space to anyone who wants it? Yeah...right...
I could be wrong, but I really, really have my doubts that this is legit. I signed up for their email updates, just in case they'd send out an immediate mail going "haha, fooled you." Nothing's come through yet.
Just call me a skeptic.

Its on Wired news too, but you alwys have to be warry on April Fools. 1 Gb of storage seems a bit much for a free service.

That is really awesome! 1 GB of storage! Don't think it's real though, 1 gig for everyone sounds a bit expensive, don't you think?

Well I put my e-mail address in at the bottom, Let's see if at noon I get a gotchya e-mail from them. If not, I would love to have 1 GB e-mail. My ISP doesn't even provide that.

Then it's brilliant marketing. Even if it's just a coincidence, which I doubt, by launching the day before 4/1 it set the community on fire with speculation and discussion - free press!

If it's a joke why in the world did they need to register the domain name 9 years ago?
Registrant:
Google Inc.

2400 E. Bayshore Pkwy Mountain View

Domain Name: gmail.com

Google didn't exist nine years ago. They bought the domain from the owner. Whois records do not change the "Created on" date when such transfers take place.
