Hi, does anyone now if a site appearing in an editor's bookmarks page gets a PR boost from being on that page?

Well, it is not supposed to, but there does not seem to be any real yes or no answers around. I would seem that if it does, that it would open up yet one more door for editor abuse.I see that most bookmark pages have PR4 on Google, so it would seem that if Google spiders them, it would add to PR.

The doorway to Bookmarks/ is open for spider crawling - thus if googlebot is pointed in that direction the site could possible get a PR boost. Furthermore the links in an editors bookmarks are listed on several hundred other sites that use odp data giving a newer site an instant boost in link popularity. These additional links may not be of value to an established site - but the importance should be clear to a newer site! So yes this is yet one more hole open for editor abuse - and yes I have personally seen this hole taken advantage of by several editors. Myself and several colleagues looked into this issue a few weeks back when it was discovered that the Bookmarks/ directory was open for crawling. A partner asked a few of the almighty metas if this was true and their response was a resounding yes! Editors are permitted to do anything they want in their bookmarks. Guess that explains adult oriented links in a non-adult editors bookmarks - heh! Shall we remove another brick from the bottom of the oligarchies castle?

Well, here's what I think: if I am an active editor, and I dedicate x amount of hours per month to keep my little corner of odp going, then perhaps I deserve the ability to put my site in my book-marks. Think about it: the actual PR boost, and subsequent advantage would be rather small, but a fair and meaningful reward to editors who are ethical and work hard. Though I realize that not everyone is like that.

Bookmarks/ are not included in the ODP RDF dump. Thus, it is not provided to data users unless they choose to do it independently. So, it isn't editor abuse, its people choosing to take the results from there themselves.

Your correct in saying that the Bookmark/ data is not included in the actual dump (its big enough as is), but the directory is open for crawling. So it can be taken advantage of ...As for it not being editor abuse - thats debatable in many instances. Why should an editor be allowed to place what would normally be considered inappropriate links (with regards to the guidelines) into their bookmarks? Unfortunately this issue isn’t worth debating - they arent willing to consider their general editing practices so they sure arent worried about this.

Did anyone notice that someone messed up the stats dump again on ODP - as of this morning, it is showing a total of 460 sites in the directory
